Old Black Lacquer Tray ~ Hand Painted with Japanese Houses and Landscape.
This old tray has been decorated with Japanese houses and landscape. Bright orange has been used on the house frames, trees and bridge. The roofs on the houses are brown with golden accents. Golden trees and foliage have been added to the landscape. A wonderful blue with white cap mountain has been painted in the upper portion of the tray. Two diamond shaped inlays of abalone shell. The black lacquer on the front appears to have lost its luster if it had any at all. The bottom of the tray still is shiny.
Lacquer (urushi) is a living substance - sap - carefully collected from Urushi trees (a type of Sumac, which is related to poison oak and ivy). It has been used for over six thousand years in Japan to coat all types of things, from wood to baskets to leather to pottery. Lacquer-coated pots and wooden items have been found in Japanese Neolithic sites carbon dated to about 4500 B.C
