Beautiful example of majolica! I'm sure this PAIR was sitting on a small table in an entry in the late 1800's. Perhaps with a few flowers in the vase and the calling card dish ready to hold the visitors cards. They have been decorated with a deep rich brown background. White oval cartouches outlined and colorful flowers have been added to the front and back of the vase and the dish. Steel blue bands accent the cartouches. A lighter raised weaved design trimmed in steal blue are on each side of the white cartouches. The inside of the pieces have th steal blue color. IT IS RARE TO FIND ANTIQUE FAIENCE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
Gerbing & Stephan produced majolica & stoneware during the 19th century, one of the partners Wilhelm Schiller went on to open his own company Wilhelm Schiller & sons and became one of the most prolific potters of his time IT has the G & St impressed mark, A must have for the Gerbing & Stephan and WS&S collector.
