The white china bowl of this magnification tureen has beautiful curved sides with ridges that taper to a 5"W scalloped base. A wide band of green ribbons, pink & blue flowers, and curly golden vines circle the edge. The flowers have raised enamel applied enhancing the design. Upslope handles with gilt lined waves are on each side. Embossed paisley curls are around the base. The lid gently slopes up in pleats to a wave top knob. A garland of matching ribbon & flower patterns circles the rim. Embossed white paisley patterns circle below the knob. An open slot for a ladle is on one side. There is minimal gilt age wear around the rim, but it is a lovely piece. There are no chips, hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc This elegant porcelain soup tureen is by the Lamberton Works. The Lamberton Works, Trenton, NJ, first opened in 1869 by three local Quaker businessmen. In 1878, Thomas Maddock became sole owner of the company he and partners began in 1860. The Maddock Co. was one of the largest pottery producers for over 50 years, instrumental in the development of sanitary ware in America. It produced an extensive line of decorative ware at its Lamberton Works until the company was sold in 1929.
