This is a decorators dream and truly a magnificent piece! Decorators are using old suitcases in every room to add that special touch. This one would definitely add that touch, make the room pop and be a conversation piece all at one time!! We have never seen anything like it and are unsure of what it was made for. The builder has used solid sheets of gorgeous rich mahogany for the top, bottom and sides. He has then framed these pieces with what appears to be over an inch wide cherry wood that he has placed into cut outs on the mahogany pieces. He has added round wooden feet to the bottom and to one side so it can lay flat or stand upright and not hurt the wood surface. It has metal keyed latches on each end of one side and also a brass center full mortise lock under the handle. The small brass lock is inscribed Corbin Cabinet Co New Britton Conn USA. (Corbin Cabinet Lock Company was founded in 1882 in New Britain, CT. Corbin was a very common furniture, cabinet and trunk lock in the late 19th and early 20th century. Corbin Cabinet Lock was established in 1882 as a branch of P & F Corbin in New Britain, CT.) Attached to one side is a hand sewn leather handle attached by two metal looped clasps. The top is attached with a 18" brass piano hinge and two leather straps connecting the top to the sides. These straps are attached to the wood with brass rivets or nails, one nail is missing. On the inside lower portion additional pieces of wood have been added making a ridge above the lower part allowing the top to fit snugly down against it. It has been attached by round headed nails. The wooden pieces would definitely keep a lot of dust, moisture and things from getting in between the top and the bottom pieces. The corners on one side have slight splits in the wood where the lighter cherry wood was attached.
Check out the internet for great decorating ideas for old suitcases!!! I've seen pictures where a suitcase is sat on an old luggage rack, like the ones in hotels, and is used for an end table in the bedroom. This was a very nice look!
