Beautiful Porcelain Reddish Brown Teapot with Mesh Sterling Silver Overlay ~ Lenox and Mauser 1906
This is a wonderful and rare Lenox red teapot with silver overlay bearing Lenox wreath mark 12 (circa 1906). Lenox supplied silver companies such as Gorham and Mauser with blank porcelain items to decorate with silver overlay. These items included, among others, plates, tea pots, pitchers, and vases. The majority of these items were white. Colored porcelains, such as this reddish brown, are much more desirable and rare. On a deep red brown body that gleams when it catches the light, there is thick heavy etched silver overlay in mesh pattern. This silver overlay decoration adorns both sides of the tea pot, climbs up and around the spout and is also found on the lid and handle. The front of the pot also has a silver cartouche with initials in the middle of the pattern. The sides of the handle, rim of the pot and spout, the base and the finial are done in silver, as well. The silver makers mark is also on the bottom of the tea pot, it is easy to see that this is an exceptional piece with an unusual silver overlay pattern that was, without doubt, done by highly skilled master at this trade.
The tea pot's lid has been cracked and glued back together. The inner portion of the lid that fits into the pot is missing. The silver mesh did hold the pieces together nicely and from a distance it is hard to tell that is has been repaired. Please see pictures. It is free of any other chips, cracks, hairlines, spiders, flakes or flea bites.
If you are a collector of Lenox or silver overlay this will surely be a piece that would stand out!!
