This handsome example of 19th Century American Avalon Faience Majolica is this compelling display plate, produced by David F. Haynes & Co. of Baltimore; Haynes bought the old Chesapeake Pottery in 1882, and Avalon Faience was an inspired result. The plate features highly raised leaves and berries on a roughened ground, hand-painted and with gold gilt...relating to the Aesthetic Movement and making for a quite striking example of period American Majolica. That Avalon Faience marking to the back is clearly seen. Please look at the pics to see that this is absolutely not some recently replicated copy or other current reproductive pastiche. Condition is quite good but not perfect, with real presence and visual panache. There are some expected signs of time and display to the surfaces and a typical crackle to the glaze, but there are no cracks or hidden restorations to dampen your day. If you collect classic 19th Century American Majolica and especially the designs put forth by Chesapeake pottery and David Haynes, or simply wish this single improvement to the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you. IT IS RARE TO FIND VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE MAJOLICA / Faience IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
This would make a wonderful addition to any majolica collection. Please see our larger pitcher PCH83 & PLT767 that matches.
Backstamp: Faience Avalon Balt mark and the letter B in Green
