This handsome example of 19th Century American Avalon Faience Majolica is this compelling display platter, produced by David F. Haynes & Co. of Baltimore; Haynes bought the old Chesapeake Pottery in 1882, and Avalon Faience was an inspired result. The platter features highly raised leaves and berries on a roughened cream colored ground, hand-painted and with gold gilt...relating to the Aesthetic Movement and making for a quite striking example of period American Majolica. He has applied olive, teal, brown and red color to the leaves and has outlined the veins and steams. The berries are painted black and have been accented with small green leaves. The flowers have a light yellow hue with brown dots in the centers. The handles are in the shape of branches and have gold accents. There is a two inch hairline on the rim that can not be seen from the front. Please see pictures for the condition of this platter. If you collect classic 19th Century American Majolica and especially the designs put forth by Chesapeake pottery and David Haynes, or simply wish this single improvement to the ambiance of a room in your home, this will have great meaning for you. IT IS RARE TO FIND VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE MAJOLICA / Faience IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
This would make a wonderful addition to any majolica collection. Please see our larger pitcher PCH83 & PLT767 that matches.
Backstamp: Faience Avalon Balt mark and the number 21 in Red
