This beautiful pattern was printed on tableware and is seen here on a 14-sided plate / bowl. This pattern is known as Athens, and many potters had similar designs. Athens was a small town until 1834 when it became the capital of the new kingdom of Greece. The most notable of its many ancient ruins was the Parthenon on the Acropolis, so it is not surprising that the creators of this pattern included some ancient ruins, arches, trees, bushes and urns in their center view. Mountains and building are in the background. The transfer is a deep purple black color or some may say mulberry. The rim has a leaf like design next to a geometric design on the edge. There is a rim chip, a rim flake and some discoloring to the old old beauty but for being 175 years old I think it is remarkable; please see pictures. IT IS RARE TO FIND VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
