This is a very beautiful majolica plate that was manufactured in Choisy le Roi France. The faience factory produced majolica from 1860 until 1910. The firm's wares are not always marked. The common mark is usually a black ink stamped "Choisy-le-Roi". The "H Boulenger" stands for Hippolyte Boulenger a director at the pottery. The factory's work was some of the most delicate produced in France.
This plate is from an animal plate series manufactured by the Boulenger Factory. It depicts a male mallard duck done with bright vibrant colors standing on the bank of a pond. In the blue green water a small green frog appears to be floating amongst the tall green water plants. Embossed in the creamy white background of the horizon are several small ducks in flight. IT IS RARE TO FIND VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE MAJOLICA IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
This would make a wonderful addition to any majolica collection.
Backstamp: Choisy-le-Roi in shield with H. Boulenger & CO around it.
Measures: 8 ¾"
