This wonderful plate has soft scalloped, gold rim with insets that cradle the beautiful design nestled on its front. The artist has used a wonderful combination of pastel hues for the background. She has placed the spray of wild roses on the side of the plate extending them upward. She has chosen a soft pink blended with white for the rose color. The center of the roses has been painted yellow and green making the roses look very life like. The artist ‘Florence M. James’ has signed the front of this piece of artwork. She is listed in the "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China," by Alan B. Reed and is a well know china painter. Florence James was the most prolific among the women at Pickard studios. In 1901, at age 16, she had already set up her own china decorating studio in Milwaukee. In early 1905 she moved to Chicago and became one of studio’s youngest artists, male or female. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
Please see our other plates by Ms. James. They would look beautiful together as a grouping.
