Ms. James has painted a wonderful rendition of poppies on this gorgeous scalloped plate. She has painted one poppy a beautiful white with soft hues of pink accenting the petals. The center of the white poppy is green with a butter yellow around it. The other poppy is a vibrant orange with hues of yellow and white added giving the impression of the sun light glistening off the petals. The greenery is a mixture of blues, green and yellow hues. She has added a couple of golden stems of wheat with the bouquet giving it an added touch. Around the upper portion of the flowers she has used a sky blue background and the underside she has just a hint of pink in background. These colors blend into a creamy light green and gold color to finish out the background colors. She has completed this masterpiece with a golden rim and three insets designs painted in gold. The artist ‘Florence M. James’ has signed the front of this piece of artwork. She is listed in the "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China," by Alan B. Reed and is a well know china painter. Florence James was the most prolific among the women at Pickard studios. In 1901, at age 16, she had already set up her own china decorating studio in Milwaukee. In early 1905 she moved to Chicago and became one of studio’s youngest artists, male or female. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
Please see our other poppy plate by Ms. James PLT320. These two would look beautiful together as a grouping.
