This is an expertly hand painted cabinet plate with vibrant orange poppies and greenery on a ground of ivory, blue, pink and buttery yellow. The blank is slightly scalloped with gold trim and has three gold inserts adding extra beauty. The artist has placed the floral design in the middle of the plate with a few long stems with flowers and buds extending outward. She has also painted one lone blossom on the side of this plate as if it were coming out of think air. The artist ‘Florence M. James’ has signed the front of this piece of artwork. She is listed in the "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China," by Alan B. Reed and is a well know china painter. Florence James was the most prolific among the women at Pickard studios. In 1901, at age 16, she had already set up her own china decorating studio in Milwaukee. In early 1905 she moved to Chicago and became one of studio’s youngest artists, male or female. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc. This would be a nice piece to add to your Pickard collection!
