This is a beautiful light blue Staffordshire transferware plate made by T & J Mayer. This transfer is the very popular Non Pareil pattern. There are several different scenes of romantic landscapes in the Non-Pareil series. Non pareil is a French term meaning 'none similar'. It came to mean unrivaled or unique and was used by potters to indicate they had wares of highest quality. This scene depicts figures relaxing by the riverside surrounded by a bridge, minarets, mountains and large trees. This plate has a 1 3/4" border of tendrils under a floral repeat pattern. This plate has no utensil marks, chips or hairlines and is in excellent condition. IT IS RARE TO FIND ANTIQUE EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
T & J Mayer exhibited at the British Exhibitions of 1851, 1853 and 1855. They won a medal at the 1851 Exhibition. The firm produced a large earthenware table described as the 'chef-ďoeuvre of the potter's art'. They introduced many improvements in manufacture especially in polychromatic bisque printing.
