This is a Royal Vienna style Art Nouveu portrait of "Epheu" painted after H. Herkomer piece. This is a bust-length portrait of a raven-haired beauty adorned with an lilac flowers and green vines. This portrait is hand painted and individual brush strokes can be seen when viewing with a magnifying glass. The background around this goddess is brown with a hint of purple tying it in nicely with the flowers. The flowers have been accented with raised white enamel giving definition and depth. The rim of the plate is a rich, deep teal green. Golden floral transfers have been placed around the well. The rim has golden transfers of liars and flora. The ornate rim has also been adorned with gold.
The company 'Zeh, Scherzer & Co.' was founded in 1880. Their work caught the eye of 'Geo. Borgfeldt & Co.' company and during January 1907 and May 1908 'Zeh, Scherzer & Co.' produced a series of items exclusively for the company. Being very successful in decorational porcelain, the company opened its own art department in 1908 and next to many other famous designers. Based on the ongoing success of the business and the drastic increase in sales after opening the art department, the company was changed into an limited company on October 7th 1910.
This piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Manufacturing anomalies may exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
