J.W. Ludlow was an ornithological artist who apparently specialized in domestic birds. He illustrated several books published by Cassell and others between 1867 and 1886 on poultry and pigeons. His poultry illustrations are considered classics. He has sensitively portrayed his fowl in a natural farm or henhouse setting, showing the birds own personality and temperament that seems to correspond to its appearance. These faithful portraits of celebrated birds, set in elegant pastoral landscapes or tidy barnyards settings evoke both timeless sophistication and country elegance. Traditional poultry prints have been fashionable for decades as they are equally at home in a stylish city townhouse, as in a casual country home setting. It is signed Ludlow in the lower right corner. In the lower left hand corner Andie & Sleigh is printed in yellow. The print has a triple matt of deep brown, gold and a caramel color. The frame is a dark brown with gold.
