Adorable Portrait of Young African American Girl in Her Sunday Best ~ Gelatin Silver Prints ~ Four Poses ~ Photographer Signed in pencil “Wingo” ~ Wingo Studios Natchez MS 1900 – 1910
"My Momma say's I'm pretty" This little girl is adorable. All little girls love to dress up, and this one is in pure heaven! She has a beautiful dress with a lace bodice that flows out with an abundance of accordion pleats and a lacy bottom. She appears to be wearing leggings and a wonderful pair of shoes that have large flower on the laces. She is sporting a wonderful hat with netting. Mom must have let her wear her earrings for the picture! She is posing just standing in one, carrying a basket, sitting on a chair and holding her dress out probably saying "See my pretty dress". "Wingo" is signed in pencil in the lower right corner. It appears to be in the original frame and the back has not been opened. We have found a few other photos by the Wingo Studio on the Louisiana Digital Library and Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
Note: There is no yellowing or staining on this large photo. The color variation is only on the pics I took under house lighting. The paper is clean and not faded. Truly a wonderful portrait of a lovely little girl.
Our research has determined that the photos are done with gelatin silver printing technique. Gelatin silver printing was the dominant photographic process from the period of their introduction in the 1880s until the 1960s when they were eclipsed by consumer color photography. The gelatin silver or black-and-white print is thus a primary form of visual documentation in the 20th century. Its widespread use in applications as wide-ranging as fine art, snap shots, and document reproduction led to an extraordinary variety of papers with a wide range of available surface texture and gloss, and paper thickness.
