The Amalfi Coast is the region of Italy's coastline located just south of Naples and one of the most scenic coastal areas of Italy. In this painting Briganti captured the beauty of this scenic place with oil on canvas. The colors he used are dark and romantic. They are very similar to other works that he has created. The scene depicts a building built into the hillside along the Amalfi Coast. Large pillars appear to be holding up a ceiling over a walkway. A woman carried a basket is painted walking along the path. Vines and flowers are between the pillars on one side. Beautiful foliage is growing on the hillside. The artist definitely gives you a wonderful view and lets your imagination take you to this magnification place. The canvas of this piece is very old. This is an example of one of the artists larger works. It has one very small quarter inch split on the canvas as well as some tiny pin holes. The overall quality of this piece is very good. This Briganti will look absolutely beautiful on your art wall !
Special note - The frame is most likely the original. Several of his larger works that are said to be "dramatic" have this frame style and color.
Briganti was active in New Bedford, Massachusetts between 1893 and 1897. Nicholas Briganti painted luminous landscapes of bucolic scenes as well as figure and human activity. Works by Briganti done in this style are uncommon and more sought after. Briganti exhibited at the New Bedford Art Club and his work is in the New Bedford Public Library. He taught drawing at the New Bedford Business University.
