This is a great drawing from the 1920's of one of the most spectacular places in this country. The subject matter is Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park, Estes Park, Colorado. The artist is Richardson Rome-well known for his wonderful Estes Park landscape prints. I have personally hiked to this lake and it is truly a dream and has breathtaking views! This piece is signed and titled "Dream Lake". What makes this piece rare is the writing at the bottom in the artists pencil script " trial proof- second state". The scene is not the same as other renditions of Dream Lake since each proof until the final is just a little different. Some of the landscape differs, either by addition or deletion from the final version. The matting appears to be original to the print. Those acquainted with the art of drypoint engraving know that only the first handful of impressions exhibit the deep, velvety burr that makes this art so unique. This is a magnificent impression. The paper around the matting does show some age, please see pictures for condition.
Richardson Rome worked, and painted in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park as well as Boulder, and other locations. He was a multifaceted man, working at McGraw Ranch in Estes Park as a wrangler, and working with fellow artist Dave Stirling and Harriet Peters to produce several humorous works.
Matting opening is only 6 1/4 x 8 3/4" which includes the small border around the image. We gave not opened the back so are unsure of the actual size of the print. The frame size is 14 ½" x 11 ½" .
