This beautiful pitcher is attributed to Joseph Holdcroft. Holdcroft was best known for the majolica pieces he created in England between 1870 and 1885. This piece is from the "pond lily" line. As the name would indicate, the base of the pitcher is formed from a number of overlapping green lily pads in raised relief. Yellow flower petal designs in raised relief make up the upper portion of the pitcher. The inside of the pitcher is a very pale pink color. The pitcher has a wonderful shiny glaze that is associated with majolica. This piece has some rim issues that have been repaired and the inside bottom is very pitted, please see pictures for condition. A like piece can be seen in Warman's Majolica by Mark Moran pg 151 & 156. IT IS RARE TO FIND ANTIQUE EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
This item will make a fantastic addition to your majolica or faience collection!
