This is a wonderful piece of history and we feel lucky to have acquired it! This piece has a soft cream and wonderful yellow orange polychrome background over black transfers of Thetis & Achilles and a soldier. Thetis, who is known for her many interventions in the affairs of both gods and mortals, is the mother of Achilles. In the scenes she appears to be consoling her son. The transfers of Thetis and Achilles are on each side of this piece with the soldier under the spout. Greek key design with the polychrome background decorates around the rim. The decorative pewter, hinged lid with finial is in fantastic condition. The spout is offset from the piece so the liquid would pour slightly from the side. The handle has leaf shaped ends connecting to the base and a thumb rest. It has been decorated with a geometrical black transfer over the polychrome yellow ground. IT IS RARE TO FIND ANTIQUE EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
Backstamp: Flaxman in banner M rest of it is not there it should be HH& M (we found this mark in Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks by Geoffrey A. Godden) Little is known about this company.
