This piece of Amphora is amazing and a delight to look at and we consider it a rare find! The artist has created a beautiful piece of artwork with its main them of cat and mouse! The background that was chosen is a olive green with a mottled brown on a rough texture. The piece has raised leaf and vine designs done in brown vines and a dark teal green leaves wrapping around the sides. On the upper edge of one end of the planter/vase sit a cat perched in a hunting pose ready to pounce, on the other end is a small mouse cowering behind a leaf in hopes not to be seen. The inside of this piece has a luster effect in a light olive color. The piece does have crazing on the inside of this piece and two hairlines each are in the middle on each side. Due to the difference in glazes used the outer finish will not have show cracks like the interior of this piece. Crazing is a network of lines or cracks in the fired glazed surface. It happens when a glaze is under tension. A craze pattern can develop immediately after removal from the kiln or years later and is very common in antique pottery. Please see pictures for condition.
Amphora porcelain works pottery has a great following. Amphora designs began with a drawing or watercolor indicating how the finished piece should look. Once the design was approved, it was given a style number. There were several different marks used by Amphora in their checkered history, so if a mark does not match another, it does not necessarily mean the piece is an imitation. Pre-World War I pieces will be marked ‘Austria’, as Bohemia was then part of Austro-Hungary. Post-WWI pieces will be marked ‘Czechoslovakia’.
This would make a wonderful addition to your collection and displays beautifully.
