Gone are the days when we cover our jelly jars, but this is exactly what this Limoges piece was used for. People would put a common jelly jar in an elegant porcelain jar to serve it to their guest. The hole on the bottom of this piece is to pus up the jar to remove it from the holder. The artist has painted some kind of yellow/ orange fruit, possibly oranges or peaches, mixed in with white flowers and green leaves around the rim of the lid and center of the jars body. He has outlined the design with a deep brown color. He has placed this design on a background of rich yellow that graduates to a lighter yellow when it extends up the base and inward on the lid. The finial on the lid has been painted with coin gold. There are no hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
