Japanese Black & Red Lacquer Tray with handles ~ Beautiful Pheasant Bird and Flowers ~Japan after 1914 This is beautiful tray with raised sides and open handles on each end. It has been covered with a shiny black lacquer. The middle is red and a gorgeous pheasant sitting and large flowers have been hand painted on this area. Around the red background and on the raised rim golden designs have been added on the black lacquer. It is in great shape with only a few nicks to the lacquer, which can easily be covered, please see pictures for condition.
Lacquer (urushi) is a living substance - sap - carefully collected from Urushi trees (a type of Sumac, which is related to poison oak and ivy). It has been used for over six thousand years in Japan to coat all types of things, from wood to baskets to leather to pottery. Lacquer-coated pots and wooden items have been found in Japanese Neolithic sites carbon dated to about 4500 B.C
