This rare and excellent English silver plate bun warmer is composed of two shell-shaped containers with repousse decoration, hinged to close like a clam shell. This is supported by a fancy cast openwork stand on four feet with a ring at the top of the handle. The platform legs are uneven as is typical, thus a slight wobble on a flat surface. When the shell is opened there are two pierced platforms that conform to the shape of the shell that are also hinged to allow for circulation. This piece has a makers hallmark and patent number on the handle. The mid 19th century saw a tremendous increase in manufacturing firms; international exhibitions promoted trade but must have been also fertile hunting grounds for trades people who were out to copy successful models of other companies rather than developing their own. The need for some protection was acute and the patent laws catered to this. Registered patents were protected from piracy for a period of three years.
