The Beaver Falls Art Tile Company, Beaver Falls, PA was founded by Francis W. Walker who experimented with non-crazing glazes.
This beautiful tile depicts a young girl wearing a hat. It has been done in high relief and has a wonderful caramel color glaze applied. . It is sculpted with fine detail both in the girls hair and clothing. The tile shows some wear, please see pictures. At the turn of the last century stove tiles were quite commonly found on the fronts of cast iron stoves. These round stove tiles served as a colorful, durable (and heat resistant!) decoration to an otherwise drab household appliance. Now, the stoves are gone, but their tiles live on in collections-another testament to the durability of this medium. The tiles show great modeling and molding skills and glaze technology at times having a magical 3D effect. They had some of the best glazes of the times.
