This is a wonderful old gesso covered wood tray with handles made of metal and wood. It has a glass over the center portion of the tray protecting the treasure beneath. The treasure is, a beautiful painting on silk of a Japanese woman playing a Koto. Her kimono has bright pink sleeves with a royal blue bodice accented with a red ribbon against the lower portion of white kimono. Red and green foliage are in the surroundings behind her. The artwork is excellent and still nice and bright. This piece does have a red stamp for the artist signature but it is half hidden. We did not want to open it up and thought we would leave that up to the new owners The frame has a few cracks and chips out of the gesso covering. Please see pictures for condition.

Silk painting is a form of art that originated in India and Eastern Asia and has stood the test of time. Silk paintings date back to 200 CE in India, where wax resist and Batik techniques are traced. As the tradition spread through Eastern Asia, Japan honed methods of silk cultivation and adapted its own style of silk painting as art. Although content, influences and techniques have been modified over time, the practice of laying paint or ink over silken material has remained constant.
