Frederick Stearns & Company, established in 1855, was a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer in 19th century Detroit. They also were a leading perfume company. The fragrance Luculia was a specialty perfume at that time. This is a gorgeous bottle that has a wonderful frosted etching that says: LUCULIA A NEW ODOR FREDERICK STEARNS & CO with a shield and a bird on top. The stopper is a round cut crystal giving the piece elegance. The piece is beautiful but does have minor imperfection to the etching and a chip on the dauper.
Measures: 8” H x 2 ¼” W
The article below explains a little about the bottle and the company. From Bulletin of pharmacy, Volume 2 1888 It pays to push the best goods in the perfume line, and a trade well established by selling the finest odors. This trade which will be permanent and entirely satisfactory both to the retailer and customer. Fine goods can only be produced by using fine material, aided by skilled labor. We import all the French flower pomades used by us direct from Grasse, also the finest and most expensive essential oils, and we can thus guarantee the quality of the ingredients to be the best. Our bouquets are made from formulae of established superiority, and are well aged before sending out, thereby producing that softness of quality and blending together properly, so much admired in Lubin's and Atkinson's odors. There is no way so economical in purchasing perfumes as to buy them in bulk. The attractive appearance of our bottles adds greatly to their selling quality. As a special inducement to introduce our bulk goods to those unacquainted with them, we offer with every order of eight pints an ELEGANT CHERRY CASE, which holds the bottles in place and prevents outsiders wasting the perfumery, the bottles being locked in; but the odors can be tested from the stoppers, the only true way. This case goes with eight pints or ten halfpints, not less, and will be supplied either on regular or extra etched bottles.Case of eight pints, etched label, cut lapidary stopper, at $3.75 $30 co.
