This is a magnificent piece! The colors are bright and so vibrant. The jug has a wonderful cobalt blue neck with impressed wave designs. Two brown bands with raised decorations are on the neck. A brown and yellow mottled handle extends at an angle from the neck and connects to the upper portion of the bulbous base. On the top of the base is rich brown and mauve petal like shapes extending down from the next onto the base. The bulbous base is separated with two designs; the upper has a great olive green background with applied slip decorations of peach, cream and gold flowers with green leaves. Raised gold has been used for the stems. Around the handle embossed golden design of bamboo type stalks and leaves have been placed. The flowers appear to be coming out from the bamboo in a vine fashion and going around the jug. The lower portion of the base is in nice golden brown basketweave design. The jug is sitting on a three tier round cobalt blue base. There is a firing line at the point of handle attachment and a few flowers have slip missing, neither of which interfere with the integrity of the piece. It is high quality majolica and is in very good condition. A similar example of this piece may be found in Victoria Bergesen's "Majolica" book. IT IS RARE TO FIND VINTAGE AND ANTIQUE MAJOLICA IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
This would make a wonderful addition to any majolica collection. Please see our other animal series plates!
