This is a wonderful old Blue Willow pattern drainer! This piece would have fit inside a platter and was originally used for boiled fish. The holes in the drainer would allow the water and juices to separate from the fish. Later they were also used to drain the juices from meat. These older earthenware drainers are very hard to come by! The pattern on the Blue Willow plates looks Chinese, but was first made in England. Many English designers copied Chinese plate designs. The Blue Willow plate design is one of the best known designs in the world. Notice how the design is blue, making the plate stand out and very beautiful. The plate tells a story. The story is about a rich man names Tso Ling. The house on the plate represents his home. He had a beautiful daughter named Kwang-se. She was the promised bride of an old wealthy man. She fell in love with Chang, her father's clerk. Chang and Kwang-se eloped and Kwang-se's father was going to have them killed. The gods turned them into turtle doves before Kwang-se's father could have them killed. The two turtle doves are on the top of the plate. The plate has a few chips on the rim but nothing unusual for its age, please see pictures. IT IS RARE TO FIND OLDER EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IF PRESENT IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
