This is a wonderful old set by Ridgways, circa 1890 Hanley, Staffordshire England. It consist of a beautiful pitcher and five mugs. Each mug and the pitcher have been decorated with two of Hugh Thomson scene from "Coaching Days And Coaching Ways". Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), the famous illustrator, did a wonderful series of drawings for the book, first published in 1888, by Mac Millan & Co. The book's popularity was underscored by the success the Ridgways firm had upon issuing their long series of "Coaching Days" ware. The backgrounds of the pieces have a wonderful tobacco-brown and other various shade of brown. A black transfer of the drawings applied to the background really stand out and make this pieces pop. The silver handle and bands give these pieces a nice added accent. The silver has some wear on the handles and rims and there is light overall crazing, otherwise, in fine condition.
