Under the creative direction of Felix Bracquemond between the years of 1875 and 1882, Haviland & Co produced some of the world's most amazing barbotine terra cotta pottery ever seen. While operating in Paris at the Auteuil studio, Bracquemond was able to show the vision Charles Haviland wanted to express in using common clay for the new art pottery designs. This large jardiniere is footed and totally hand painted. Sculpted with clay, the slip and applied flowers are in high relief. Bracquemond shows his confidence in the artistic style of his studio, and chose this jardiniere for it's shape and size. By allowing the stems to rise above the body and rim of the jardiniere, the dramatic effect Bracquemond desired was achieved.
This achievement clearly expressed Bracquemond's focus on the sculptural beauty rather than the host piece of pottery. The barbotine flowers Bracquemond created were to be the true "star" of the art piece not the mold.
Decorated of equal quality on all sides of the jardiniere, it was surely meant to be viewed in the round. Completely free-standing if desired in the middle of a room.
The marks on the bottom of the jardiniere are Haviland & Co., Limoges, and the numbers 5 and 1.

The overall colors shown in the flowers and stems are excellent. The body colors have variations of browns, greens, black and creamy beige. Hints of blue and yellow can also be seen.

No repairs or restorations. There are a few minor glaze losses and chips to some petals and buds.

The overall condition is superior and a true show piece.
