This is a breathtaking piece of workmanship and subject matter! The master artist Dubois is well known for creating superb pieces of artwork on porcelain and this piece is truly one of his best! Limoges plaques with the Dubois artist's signature are one of the most sought after by collectors. Dubois is featured and listed as a well known French artist in Mary Gaston's reference book: 'Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain' 3rd edition. He has chosen a wonderful rococo scalloped rimmed, deep set plaque to create his master piece. He has painted the raised relief edge with Roman coin gold bring your attention to the center. The main motif is a female hunting party pursuing an elk! They have chased the elk from the forest into the water. Dubois has given some of the women long flowing hair. He has used beautiful colors of blue, purple yellow and white gowns. The shading that he used on the gowns created folds giving them beautiful forms. The skin tones and facial features are so amazing! On many of the females he has left bare breast exposed. One huntress is standing on the bank with spear ready to launch at the elk. The other huntresses are preparing their spears as they assemble along the bank. Another female is holding back two hunting dogs keeping them safely away from the game that they have found for their masters. Dubois has added raised white enamel on the clothing and the dogs giving it a nice look. The artist has used a mixture of browns, greens, and yellows to create a realistic forest behind the beautiful goddesses. Looking at the deep colors of the forest you feel like it is endless! The trees and ground colors gradually blend into a body of teal blue water. Dubois has painted the elk in the water in hopes to escape the dogs and hunting team. He has used the combination of the color on this piece to complement each other and to balance out the motif. The back has four drilled holes for hanging this fantastic piece. This piece has a paper label marked LRL but not a stamped LRL mark. We have checked in our research books and have identified the mold shape as one used by the porcelain factory Lazeyras, Rosenfeld & Lehman. The gold is slightly worn on the edge but definitely does not take away from the beauty. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Manufacturing anomalies may exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
