This gorgeous dish was hand painted by Florence James, in the beautiful autumn currants pattern. We feel this is a semi rare piece due to the fact that Florence James usually did florals and not fruit. The artist `Florence M. James' has signed the front of this piece of artwork. She is listed in the "Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China," by Alan B. Reed and is a well know china painter. Florence James was the most prolific among the women at Pickard studios. In 1901, at age 16, she had already set up her own china decorating studio in Milwaukee. In early 1905 she moved to Chicago and became one of studio's youngest artists, male or female. She painted this piece before she started with the Pickard Studios. James has started her masterpiece using a very rich color for the background composed of varying shades of reds and rusts on the upturned sides and butter yellow on the base and well of the dish. The currant motif is absolutely magnificent! She has painted them so lifelike and has given them a very three dimensional look. She has mixed green and golden leaves with brown branches amonge the berries adding that extra naturalistic feel. The rim of the dish is decorated with gold gilt and red outline that is in excellent condition completing the piece beautifully. This piece is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. Manufacturing anomalies may exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
