This is an awesome pair done in the romantic "Oriental" pattern, purple transfer, made by New Wharf Pottery Co. The glaze on this piece is phenomenal and could have been applied yesterday it is so shiny. Purple encompasses a myriad of shades from a quite bluish pink through lavender and puce to deep wine. Although many collectors refer to the ware as "mulberry," the color is correctly known as purple. The inks used to produce this hue simply do not flow. Instead, they offer us a violet rainbow that continually feeds us new surprises. The center view is an oriental one in which a man carrying a long pole rides a camel, accompanied by another man with a long pole. In the distance are many oriental buildings. Exotic trees frame the view on both side, and the sky is full of clouds. Surrounding this central scene is a border, embossed at the edge with gentle scrolls, and printed with alternate medallions of mosques and flowers overlaying a stylized floral background. This piece in excellent condition with only a small pin head flake on the rim and a small area where the glaze did not get distributed on the inside of the cup. Capturing the true purple color of the transfer is almost impossible but it is truly purple! IT IS RARE TO FIND ANTIQUE EARTHENWARE IN "LIKE NEW" CONDITION BECAUSE OF WEAR FROM USE AND AGE. TINY GLAZE FLAKES AND CRAZING IS NORMAL AND ADDS CHARACTER TO EACH PIECE.
