Ernest Hemingway novel 1940 “FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS”. First Edition, First Printing. Scribner’s Sons with “A” on the copyright page.
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS is generally considered to be Hemingway's best work ever and certainly one of the best war novels ever written. The first edition, first printing was published on Oct. 21, 1940. The book was an immediate success. It was the book-of the-month and nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. The Scribner's "A" is on copyright pages of all first editions published by Scribner's since 1930. There is no book jacket.
There is an ownership notation on the inside front page that reads "Mrs. D.F Bennett, Book of the Month, November, 1940". Hemingway married Martha Gellhorn of St.Louis, Missouri this same month and year.
A highly collectable book with 471 pages and is in very good condition. The cream color or beige nubby cloth boards are clean and bright, no shelf wear. The binding is good, no loose pages. There is very slight discoloration on the inside of the front and back page.
This first edition book will fit well into a serious Hemingway collectors showcase. This is the true first printing with the capital "A" and an authenticated ownership of November 1940. Buy with confidence and 100% assurance of getting a true "first – first".
