This is the first piece of Pickard that I have seen decorated with Blueberries. I have looked through the Pickard book and do not see any examples of this fruit. This beautiful piece has been hand painted with a soft yellow background on the inside and outsides. The main motif is wonderful blueberries that have been painted on the sides and center of the inside of the bowl. The artist has nestled the berries amongst leaves giving the motif a very natural look. Added gold work to the design gives it a wonderful detailed look. The bowl is proudly signed by Beutlich in gold. Overall beautiful example of the artist work. Manufacturing anomalies may exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
Anton Berthold Beutlich worked for Pickard studios form 1898-1925 when he died from burns from a mixture he was preparing at the studio caught fire. In his haste to remove it from the building he splashed it on his self. He was well known for many styles of china painting, including Satsuma and naturalistic fruits and flowers rendered in traditional formats. His work can be seen on number examples in "Alan B. Reed's reference book 'Collector's Encyclopedia of Pickard China".
