This is an amazing piece of porcelain masterfully decorated. It has a cream ground color and a nice scalloped edge trimmed with gold and gold sponge decoration. The sides have raised relief scroll work. There is a wide robin egg blue ban running through the center an up the sides. On this band are beautiful raised gold enamel stems and leaves with wonderful pink and gray flowers. The yellow centered flowers are accented with raised pink enamel. Gold sponge effect is going through the center of the flowers and up each side. There are no chips, hairlines or cracks; manufacturing anomalies do exist, the occasional tiny iron speck, dust 'bump' in the glaze, etc.
This company was founded in 1838 as 'Burley & Co.', which then in 1871 became 'Burley & Tyrrell'. The department store located at 83 & 85 State Street was specialized on porcelain, pottery and glassware. Importing and distributing German porcelain at first they began importing Bohemian porcelain around 1880. In 1883 the retail portion of the business was sold to a nephew, who ran his business under the name of 'Burley & Co.' and owned a decoration studio on Wabash Avenue. That part of the business was heavily involved in china decorating from 1885 to 1931 and not only imported British Minton porcelain but also sold various blanks to Pickard. Over the time, 'Burley & Co.' distributed Haviland and John Maddock (England) as well as Smith-Phillips and Union Porcelain china. Furthermore, 'Burley & Co.' supplied china to at least six railroads beginning in 1891 and the 'Cloverleaf Steamboat Line' in circa 1900. In the year 1907 the businesses were rejoined and for the next years were very successful until it was decided to sell the company to 'Albert Pick & Co.' in 1919, a deal that was complete by 1923.
