Awesome Asian Lacquer Box ~ Hand Painted with Oriental / Chinese Style Dragon and Emblem
This possible could be part of a stacking bento box. It is really neat and could be used for keeping just about anything in. The lid has a deep taupe background on top with brick red color on the ribbed side. On the taupe background a beautiful rust colored Chinese dragon, accented with gold is the main decorations. A golden accented, deep green ribbon runs under the dragon and under a beautiful emblem. The emblem is a circular design with a white outline and white design in the center. Bright orange, deep green and a blue flower fills in the circular design. The lower portion of the box has six ribs on the side in the brick red color. The inside of the box is black lacquer. The inside has a few flaws in the lacquer otherwise the piece is perfect. Please see pictures for condition.
Lacquer (urushi) is a living substance - sap - carefully collected from Urushi trees (a type of Sumac, which is related to poison oak and ivy). It has been used for over six thousand years in Japan to coat all types of things, from wood to baskets to leather to pottery. Lacquer-coated pots and wooden items have been found in Japanese Neolithic sites carbon dated to about 4500 B.C
