A fabulous and rare Victorian sterling filigree parure set with operculum shell*.
Operculum jewelry became a fad during the Victorian era.
Victorians believed there was a constant battle between good and evil raging in the world. They believed you could be cursed for eternity just by the glance of a malevolent eye. To counter such black magic they often wore jewelry made from operculum.
The unique parure consists of a necklace, bracelet and earrings that uses operculum shell in filigree settings.
The operculum shell has a colorful top of dark green, golden brown and creamy white. The backs are flat with a delicate brown spiral pattern on white.
The necklace is set with eight operculum shells that are graduated in size with the largest one is at the top of the pendant.
The shells have silver bezels framed with a row of coiled wire and and a final edge of filigree. They are connected with double chains. The pendant has a double drop finished off with a filigree teardrop.
The earrings have the same design, they have screw back findings.
The bracelet has a single shell in the center. The rest of the bracelet has sterling filigree designs within a wire frame and decorative handmade chain at the ends.
The necklace measures 16.5" long and 7/8" wide across the largest shell in the chain, the pendant drop is 3" long with the large shell setting measuring 1".
The bracelet is 7" long and 1" wide in the center, it tapers gradually to the back. The earrings are .75".
Very well made and in excellent, all original condition with no damage and minimal wear.
A wonderful sterling and operculum shell parure from the Victorian era.

*Operculum is a flexible membrane on a snail when it is alive. Once it's dead, the membrane hardens and becomes just like a typical calcareous “seashell.” The type used in jewelry has a cabochon shaped, colorful top, in colors of dark green, golden brown and creamy white, while the back is flat with a delicate brown spiral pattern on white.
