An exceptional Victorian 14k brooch with a fabulous garnet cabochon and beautifully aged patina.
The high domed pin has Etruscan style embellishment with fine twisted wire work and tiny gold beads.
The bezel set garnet cab is a rich red color, it is famed with fine twisted wire.
There is open space between the setting and dome which is perceived as enamel because it is dark, the gold dome resumes with a twisted wire edge and the fine wire work design.
The border of the brooch has two rows of twisted wire, one very fine and the edge slightly heavier.
The back has a glass covered hair compartment with an incredible arrangement of the fine light brown hair, it is artfully arranged using seed pearls and gold wire.
The back edge is inscribed in flowing script 'To M.A.J. from P.M.A. June 30, 1864".
Measures 1&3/8" by .5" high, total weight is 11.2 grams. Unmarked, the gold tested 14k with acid.
Excellent condition, no damage and minimal wear, the only signs of wear are on the back, there are two light scratches on the glass and an insignificant dent where the 'To' is engraved.
It closes with a C catch and riveted pin stem that exceeds the length of the pin, the pin stem is not gold.
A fine example of Victorian keepsake mourning jewelry in amazing condition.
