A wonderful antique Victorian sterling and enamel vinaigrette pendant and original chain c1900.
Vinaigrettes were used to ward off the foul odors on the streets or as a remedy for faintness.
The egg shaped pendant is beautifully enameled in powder blue, the center has triangular holes which allows the scent to disperse.
The pendant unscrews in the center to allow access to the interior for placement of a scent soaked cloth or cotton.
The pendant hangs from the original chain that is embellished with four enameled plaques.
The pendant measures 1" by .75", the chain is 21" long, the plaques are 5/8" by 1/8".
Excellent condition, the only wear is a very shallow surface flake (photo 8) it is on the clear coating over the enamel so there is no color loss.
The original cotton wool is still in place.
Marked sterling inside, total weight is 13.7 grams.
A rare and beautiful Victorian sterling vinaigrette pendant and chain c1900 just waiting for your favorite scent!
