A fine quality antique carnelian intaglio seal ring* from the early to mid Victorian era.
This style was used on a global scale by world leaders and monumental men, the ring was seen as a way to prove authenticity. It was once an important part of society and culture and played a significant role in history.
This ring is beautifully crafted in 18k yellow gold and set with a flat carnelian hand carved in reverse with an Old English style 'P'. When pressed into hot wax or clay, the seal leaves the impression of the P.
The setting and shank are regal, the bezel set carnelian sits on a row of open circles, a contoured layer of gold with an embossed design is below the circles.
The heavy domed shank meets the setting at the embossed layer, the gold under the setting is contoured for comfort.
It is very well made with exceptional workmanship and clean carving. On the finger the ring appears as a stately piece with a carnelian cab, the photos show the ring at an angle so that the intaglio is visible.
Ring size 8.5, the setting measures 9/16" by .75", the carnelian intaglio is just under .5" by 5/8", the thick shank is 1/8" wide. I does appear that the ring was professionally sized down at some point.
Excellent condition, no damage and minimal wear, no chips, scratches or damage to the stone, the gold work is in fine condition as well.
Unmarked for karat, the gold tested 18k with acid.
Total weight is 7 grams.
A wonderful example of an antique seal ring with character and history.

*Historically, signet rings played a very important role in business and politics. Used as a seal, the gentleman would use his ring which featured his unique family crest, emblem or monogram to sign legal or important documents, some of which played remarkable roles in our history books. By dipping the ring into hot wax or soft clay, the ring left a distinct seal that was considered, at the time, to be more official than that of a signature.
