*Moonstone is a variety of feldspar that was originally named for the early mining site Mt. Adularia in Switzerland. The term was coined to describe the mesmerizing glow likened to that of the moon. "Adularence" is the optical phenomenon of iridescence that creates a floating blue light within this enchanting gem.
Moonstone is the alternative birthstone to pearl for the month of June and is considered a talisman of the inward journey, taking one deep into the self and soul. It is thought to open the heart to nurturing as well as assisting in the acceptance of love. Ancient Romans believed moonstone was born from solidified rays of the moon. Both the Romans and Greeks associated the moonstone with lunar deities. The blue glow is as mystifying today as it was 3,000 years ago.
