A charming 14k gold antique pin from the Georgian period.
These small bar pins were known as "lace pins" and were not just ornamental. They were used to hold something in place-to confine a length of lace at the neckline or at the throat, sometimes to attach drapery at the shoulder. They often had sentimental meaning, and frequently classified as sentimental jewelry or mourning jewelry when they include hair.
This mourning pin features a windowed compartment with two colors of hair loosely woven and alternating in diagonal stripes.
The center is framed with a raised and embossed pattern, the flat outer frame is beveled.
The glass has beveled edges and is set in a bezel.
Measures .75" by 9/16", the hair compartment is .5" by just under 5/16".
Excellent antique condition, no damage and minimal wear.
It closes with a C clasp and riveted tube pin stem that exceeds the length of the pin, a testament to its age. It has the hand engraved initials FBP in script.
Unmarked, it tested 14k gold, the pinstem is not gold, total weight is 2.4 grams.
A wonderful example of an antique Georgian lace/mourning pin c1800-30s.
