A rare and dramatic antique Victorian faceted bead mourning necklace made from Whitby jet.
Natural jet* was very popular in Victorian England, It became very popular with the death of Queen Victoria's mother and her husband Albert in 1861.
The beads are polished to a high shine, the light reflects off the facets creating a subtle sparkle.
Total length is 24", the beads are graduated in size from 7mm by by 5mm to 18mm by 12mm.
The necklace has been restrung on black beading cord for strength and longevity, it closes with a blackened sterling clasp.
Excellent condition, no damage or visible wear, secure spring ring clasp.

Mined in Whitby, England, jet is an opaque black fossil of anthracite coal which had been known of since ancient times. When polished jet develops such a high shine and luster that it was used as a mirror. The deep intense black color never fades.
