A fabulous 14k yellow gold Egyptian Revival necklace c1950-60s.
The scarab beetle was sacred to the ancient Egyptians, a symbol of resurrection and the afterlife.
The necklace has seventeen bezel set cabochon gemstones carved into scarabs.
The gemstones are slightly graduated in size, the five cabs in the front are the largest, they also have the connecting rings above center so the stones in the front lie perfectly in a U.
The next two stones on each side are slightly smaller in size, they attach at the center of the chain as do the smallest four on each side. This detail may seem insignificant but it actually serves to keep the stones in perfect alignment around the neck.
The seventeen stones in order from the clasp side include jasper, clear quartz, chrysoprase, rhodonite, black onyx, aventurine, tiger eye, blue onyx, carnelian, green onyx, rose quartz, black onyx, striped agate, amethyst, citrine, chalcedony and moss agate.
The cabochons are carved on both sides, set horizontally in open back bezels and attached with soldered rings.
Excellent condition, no damage or visible wear, clean and beautiful.
Marked 14k on the secure spring ring clasp, the necklace was tested with acid to confirm gold content.
Total length measures 16.25" by 7/16", the largest bezel set stone, (center carnelian) is 17mm by 12mm, the next four on each side are 15mm by 12mm, the last four on each side are 13mm by 11mm.
A beautiful and distinctive vintage scarab necklace with a wonderful Egyptian revival theme and great combination of genuine stones.
