A great pair of operculum* shell earrings set in sterling screw back findings.
The Victorians loved this attractive treasure from the sea and and believed they empowered their owners and protected against being cursed by the evil eye.
Operculum shell resembles a cat's eye or a protective eye.
The shiny, domed shell has a flush of dark green at the top shading to apricot and chestnut brown against white. Coming from two sources they are of course slightly different in appearance but are nicely matched.
The shells are set with fancy prongs on the sterling findings.
Each measures 9/16" by 5/8".
Marked sterling on the back, total weight is 7 grams.
Excellent condition, no damage and minimal wear.
An interesting and unique pair of sterling and operculum shell earrings.

*Operculum is the material that certain snails create to protect themselves after retreating within their shells. An operculum shell appears to be a thin, oval shaped disc from the outside. This side, which is exposed to the outside world, is rather flat and nondescript. The side closest to the snail is a rounded mound that looks eerily like an eye.
On the back you will see the natural brown swirls of the shell on a cream background.
