A fabulous and rare Arts & Crafts or Jugendstil wall or desk clip made by Hugo Berger* c1900.
The figural owl is a combination or iron and brass, the back and the body of the owl are hammered iron while the applied eyes and beak are brass.
The owl is on a spring clip that works smoothly and functions well as a paper clip to hold bills, letters or whatever paper items might be floating around a desk.
Measures 5&3/8" by 2.75" by 2.25" at the high end. A keyhole cut into the back allows it to hang on a wall
The condition is excellent, it is very well made and held firmly together with iron rivets. It has a heavily oxidized patina that is expected on an item of this age that is made from hammered iron. There is a small area on the bottom right corner of the owl that has lost some of the applied patina- no distraction.
It has Germany in incised letters on the back and a hallmark for Goberg that is very hard to read.
A wonderful opportunity to own a great piece of Arts & Crafts iron work, the Goberg owl has become the signature piece of Hugo Berger.

*Working as Goberg, in Germany during the early 1900's, Hugo Berger is best known for his hammered iron pieces. Besides being considered a metal fabricator of the Arts & Crafts era, Goberg is also closely associated with the German Jugendstil (German equivalent to Art Nouveau).
