A stunning vintage 14k yellow gold ring with a beautiful black star sapphire.
The shining cabochon is not actually black but a soft black, the optical phenomenon responsible for star sapphire’s shimmering rays is called asterism*.
The small star has six points, it travels within the stone following the source of light.
The gold setting has raised lines that follow the shape of the sides of the bezel set stone.
The ring is widest at the front and gradually tapers to the back.
Ring size 9+, it measures .5" in the front and tapers to just over 1/8" in the back, the star sapphire is 8mm by 6mm.
The ring was most likely intended for a man but could certainly suit a woman quite well.
Marked 14k inside the shank, there are two hallmarks that I can't quite read, they are shown in photo 8.
Total weight is 7.2 grams.
Excellent condition, no damage or visible wear.
A striking vintage 14k black star sapphire ring c1950s.
* Asterism is caused by small needle-like inclusions of the mineral rutile. Black star sapphires owe their stars and their dark color to included crystals of the shiny mineral hematite.
