A great example of an antique Victorian retractable reel pin made by Ketcham & McDougall* of Orange NJ.
This style pin was used to secure a small pocket watch, mechanical pencil or other utilitarian item for every day use. Men used them for a monacle or pince-nez.
The pin attached to the collar or lapel and pulls out like a tape measure.
The black enamel indicates that this style was a mourning piece, the back is silver metal.
Marked on the back Ketcham & McDougall, Orange, NJ. Under the pin stem it is marked "Ketchall" across the clever safety feature for the C hook.
Excellent condition, no damage or wear, reel works perfectly.
Measures 1" in diameter, .25" thick, the chain reel is 10" long.
A great vintage mourning reel pin in fabulous condition.
*Original company founded in 1832 by John Roshore. It became Ketcham & McDougall around 1875.
